#90

The portal image shattered with a flurry of sparks, severing the link between the two universes. Instantly, the eardrums of the three travelers popped, saving them from the maddening roar of the entire planet exploding. In less than a second, almost seven billion human beings died; but deep with the Earth's surface, three of them survived. The shaft that Mina had climbed into was sucked into the depths of space, alongside millions of tons of pulverized rock. Sensing the brief vacuum, the machinery within the shaft desperately attempted to maintain gravity and an internal atmosphere, for the safety of the lifeforms cradled inside it.

Again the scream of this vacuum, Susie somehow called out, in the simplest of terms: “Hang onto something.”

Jacob grabbed onto the portal console, while Susie snatched a pipe on the wall. Mark clung desperately to Susie.
