Jacob recovered quickly, but as soon he did, Doctor Kay was down the stairs again.

We've arrived,” he said.

What?” replied Jacob. “We've probably been aboard for, what...twenty minutes?”

A lot can happen in twenty minutes.” He gave a look at both of the young men. “You know that now. And so do Mina and Aurel.”

Jacob stood up. “You know what happened to them?”

Of course.” He took this time to turn away. “I'm sorry, Jacob, but they, along with everyone in the immediate area around that cave, are dead.”

Jacob blinked.

What?”

There was silence.

Our enemy entered through the cave, my friend,” Kai said, not turning back to face him. “However, he has...an affinity for certain areas. Certain countries. America, mostly, because he was a born patriot on his homeworld. A member of the 'Lady Liberty' cults there, at least in one of his lives. He warped into the universe via the London cave, and from there set up a localized warp to the strongest 'Soft Place' he could find. In this case, Maurice.”

I don't care about that right now,” Jacob said, controlling his voice. “What the hell was that about Mina?”

Presumably she was struck down by one of the enemy's Guards, just as Aurel was. I suspect she held her ground, but her entire school was...sterilized.”

What.” It was a flat response. Jacob began breathing heavily, but then flattened that, as he flattened his words. “Do you have proof?”

The Doctor shrugged. “She could have survived. Theoretically. I know for a fact, though, they would have never allowed Aurel to escape.” This time he did turn back. “We could look for her, Jacob, but for now we need to locate you and your friend's respective siblings, if possible, and prevent a breach.”

A breach?”

It isn't merely a strange sense of Americophilia that motivates our foe. This particular Soft Place has almost direct access to this Earth's core.”

Jacob was shunting his stress elsewhere; into the environment. “Meaning?”

Meaning that they intend on awakening a serpent. A World Snake, within the planet's center, which I believe will destroy every living thing on Earth-Beta-2. Your world.”

Why is Maurice, of all places, one of these 'Soft Place' things?”

I don't know. There are strong psychogeographic energies bound to it. We're still investigating.”

Jacob thought about it for awhile. His outward appearance was one of simple unhappiness. He didn't betray anything else.

If they access this Soft Place—they could potential destroy the world. That's what you mean, right?”

Yes.”

There was another pause. “Then I guess we've got to do this. But.” His voice barely rose in emotion at all. “After this, we head for England. We look for Mina.”

She's gone, my friend.”

I doubt that.” The voice was slightly mocking, as if this dimension-surfing Doctor was below him. And in Jacob's resolve, he was.

The Doctor sighed. “Very well.”

The front door of The House opened, and below, they could see that they were high above the fields around Maurice. They was a cold, high-air wind that swept through the Manor.

Like I said. We've arrived.”

#49

McGee Manor was haunted. Snaps McGee, its owner on Earth-20181, had used a certain part of The House to store the bodies of the people his party had killed, for further use. After a particular event in 1922, the corpses vacated the chamber and The House altogether, and were Lost. However, while their remains were Lost, their spirits remained, giving the place an unnatural aura for many years. When the house was re-purposed as The House, its hauntological energies became distorted after a passage through The Unscene, and the once-human spirits became...something else. Once it was placed at Archetype Central in the Lost Stream, it traveled back to the dawn of existence, to the days of the Primeval Superhero, and transmitted its warped beacon throughout the cosmos, creating every haunted house that ever existed, including the Vecchio estate.

Jacob and Lex never learned this, of course. Most of the above was a rough translation of the thoughts passing through the mind of Doctor Kay. Jacob and Lex were too busy trying to get their own minds to adjust to the sight of the Manor.

We've renovated recently,” the Doctor said, which didn't help matters; didn't help brace the two young men against the flickering blackness of the walls, outlined faintly with thin but radiant lines of white light. The walls would occasionally...cease to be, as it were, revealing wood paneling and the sort of late 19th Century elegance that they were expecting upon entering. These were regressions to The House's original appearance. The regressions, though, were only very brief, and so the intense darkness of these photo-negative walls was overwhelming. It didn't help that it was openly multidimensional, meant for higher eyes.

In front of them, outlined in jagged-seeming but perfectly straight patterns of shifting and flickering white lines, was the Grand Staircase. It led, obviously, to the upper levels, where a grandfather clock and a system of railings were also defined by the same maddening lines. Scribbles. Jacob tried to focus on the Staircase itself instead, examining how it seemed to be made out of levitating platforms, one for each stair, that appeared to be solid-state holograms of some kind. At least, the popular conception of such. They weren't so easy on the eyes either, swirling within their ill-defined outlines with all the colors of the rainbow.

The whole place just felt...wrong, and Jacob was doing his best to stay upright.

I'm technically not supposed to be doing this,” Doctor Kai said. “So please don't use any of the phones or computers. I can give you one of my guns in case you have difficulty ignoring the entities, but please don't go in the basement.”

Jacob and Lex said nothing, instead preferring to try to amble towards the Staircase.

The stair they sat on depressed slightly, as if it was sinking into a void. Jacob reached behind him, and found that indeed, the space between the stairs was little more than emptiness. What did it lead to...? He decided he didn't want to know.

Kay walked past them, going up the stairs and entering a room through a similarly ridiculous door. When he emerged, he had two USP Matches, which he threw rather haphazardly to the two. They jumped as they thudded next to them, almost falling into the void beyond the steps. When they turned to look back at him, he was gone. Probably vanished into one of the rooms up there.

I don't like this,” Lex said then.

Neither do I,” Jacob replied. “This just doesn't look good. I don't trust this Doctor, either. Even if he did give us guns.”

Are the guns loaded?”

He checked. They seemed to be, unless they were blanks. Jacob didn't know really what blanks looked like. As mentioned above, he did know about archery and thus trusted his shot with the gun—while knowing it wasn't at all the same thing, of course—and he also had fenced a while back, so if he had a sword he could handle himself. He considered ascending the stairs to question the Doctor, but he didn't trust his dexterity enough, at least for now, to climb this ridiculous Staircase.

He tried walking around on the ground floor and found that as long as he didn't exert himself, it was pretty easy. The floor itself was a normal floor—it was just hard to look at it. He sort of just looked at his feet, and even then, blinked whenever the true texture of the floor returned.

I'm going to look around this place,” he said to Lex. “If I find anything odd, or anything showing me we need to get out of here, I'll let you know.”

Lex said nothing, not quite in the mood for walking—or talkingyet.

Jacob entered one of the odd passages that was off to the side of the Grand Staircase. It was unnerving to move through; the support arch jiggled and flickered above him, like an animated child's drawing. It didn't make it look like there was any sort of dimensional substance to the passage, as if it were just a drawing, but it was sort of contrariwise. The walls somehow protruded in a semi-subliminal way, so that Jacob could sense them, even though they were all black. The passage broke off into three sections, with one to the right leading downwards. It must have been the basement. Kai had warned them not to go down there, but maybe he was hiding something important about himself that he didn't want them to see. Something that would rat him out.

He began to descend, and as he did he almost turned back.

The staircase, which was made of the same rainbow steps as the Grand Stair, was somehow was flanked with a huge cybernetic valley; black, with a dark grey sky. Cubes and towers made out of platinum rose across this infinite planet, and in the distance a silver sun could be seen. The sun let off the same sort of light as the outlines above, and Jacob wondered if maybe its light was being filtered throughout the rest of the house. Maybe the towers, which were now melting and rebuilding, were collecting the light somehow. But someone must have built all this...

There were fluttering white...squares, falling from the “sky” now. They were only box-shaped white outlines, full of shadows, which plummeted impossibly at forty-five degrees angles to the ground. Here, they shattered, and broke apart into much smaller squares. These squares fell again and again, cracking apart each time, until they were invisible. Were they parts of much larger falling squares...?

He had to get out of here. He began descending rather quickly, towards a door. It was an ordinary wooden door this time, but it was attached to a...a severed wall-chunk, which had the look being literally torn from another part of the house. The old house, that is. Before Doctor Kay “renovated” things.

It didn't matter. It was a way out, and Jacob had to take the chance.

He opened the door and stepped inside.

Despite there being no chamber on the other side of the torn-out wall, there was now a room. A meat locker, to be precise. Though there was no meat in it. Only cold.

At least, that was how it was for a little while.

Jacob turned around, deciding quickly that this was not particularly beneficial to digging up any dirt on Doctor Kai. The door was now a metal seal, as one might expect in a place like this—but the tumblers on it looked heavy, and the whole affair was neatly sealed shut. Jacob realized that he may have been locked in, but this wasn't the worst of it.

He turned around. There was a spectral little girl in the room.

Oh no.”

He cocked the USP Match. “Get away.”

Can you help me find my mommy?”

I SAID GET THE FUCK AWAY.”

What happened next was predictable, almost. The girl began to hover in the air, her greyscale form, which was lined with TV static, slowly gaining color. It was the color of blood.

Don't say bad words to me, Jacob.”

Jacob didn't really scream in so much as he just made a roaring sound while he opened fire. The bullets, of course, went right her, but they did form little pinholes where more blood started pouring out. Her legs then dropped off, making a meaty splattering sound on the floor, as she began convulsing and screaming. Her eyes grew huge but her pupils remained the same size, and they extended past her head, somehow forming a frame beyond the shape of her face as if she were a messed up sketch—the edges around it, at the bottom, began bleeding profusely, and her arms began stretching towards him, even as her mouth cracked open at the sides and became twisted, jagged, and oversized. He started screaming, and she started screaming, and the screams fused together into a weird sort of chant.

WRONG ROOM WRONG ROOM WRONG ROOM—

JOIN US JOIN US JOIN US JOIN—

Suddenly, Jacob felt inclined to stop shooting. Doctor Kai was there, with a brief flash of shadow. He was holding a brown-gloved hand up to the apparition's face.

Shhh! Sh, sh, sh...”

His face appeared just as panicked as Jacob's, but he was trying to legitimately get things under control. The ghost seemed to back away from him, even as he took Jacob's hand and started leading him backwards.

Don't turn away from it,” he whispered. This wasn't an issue; Jacob couldn't take his eyes away. By now all of its hair had fallen out and its skull was protruding, tumor-like, from the flesh of its head. Its eyes had began to merge with the skin around them in a way resembling a spiral, and this caused the flesh to start ripping and bleeding. The smile kept getting wider.

A few seconds later they were outside and back on the staircase. Except it was now a dusty wood staircase, leading up a brick shaft—not unlike something Jacob had seen in his grandfather's house. A short walk later and they were back up in the main chamber.

What happened?” Lex said, surveying Jacob's face.

I told you not to go in the basement,” Doctor Kai replied.

And with that, he set Jacob down on the steps and went back upstairs.

#48

Congratulations, Jacob!” Doctor Kai said as he climbed down in the Vecchio house.

NO!!” Jacob replied. “W-what the fuck was that?! I just suddenly started screaming and...”

Well, you have been infected with a sudden culture-virus at the hands of our foe. The infection manifested in the form of the suddenly-dreary life. You basically became a shitty Gothic heroine or a rom-com chap or something generally close to that for a second. Fortunately, you channeled the power correctly and The House was able to escape from your dream-confines into...”

What are you doing in my house?!” Lex shouted.

And what the fuck are you even talking about, you pretentious...” Jacob's voice fell apart, growling something about “Karloff”.

Like I said, our enemy infected you. Turned you into the embodiment of a particular type, or character. Shifted your fictions around. You escaped by reaching into absurdity, in your own particular way, and thus into fiction—which is the fuel for the engine of The House. You adapted, with that bad fiction in you.” He had been standing only a few feet away, but now lurched even more uncomfortably close. “Which is why I need somewhere of your own innate type.”

Please leave me alone,” Jacob replied, in the flattest voice he could conjure.

This is the turning point for your Earth, Jacob!” Kai yelled then, jumping back. “This is when it begins to become more fictional. Soon a bunch of people will turn into characters, some able to fight it, some unable. It's a mass empowering event.”

Jacob turned to Lex, looking at him with mild panic. Lex nodded, indicating at once that this was not a dream, not a hallucination, and not an imaginary story. Unless Lex nodding was part of it all as well. Jacob would never know.

Do you not believe me?” said Doctor Kai. Jacob was just realizing that Kai or Kay or whoever had literally walked through the ceiling to enter. “Turn on the TV.”

Jacob sighed, his resolve collapsing like one of the cheap Jenga sets they used for the campaigns. (He felt the lingering traces of his infection—just as one might have a final coughing fit before being well again—make him sense the grammar of that simile, and feel that it was terrible. This almost sold the idea of the “infection” right to him.) He turned on the TV as ordered; and fittingly enough with the rest of coincidences, it seemed the first channel that popped up was the one Kai wanted. It was Fox News, something Lex's parents always watched, but it was the local branch.

We go live to the town of Maurice, site of the recent attack,” the reporter was saying.

Maurice?” Jacob asked aloud.

The view shifted unsteadily, indicating the cameraman was on the move. A male reporter was ahead of him. All around them Jacob could see the familiar cornfields and pastures around the town that he had seen when he visited the campus.

...right behind us!” the reporter cried. “Keep moving!”

The shot came into focus slowly, showing a male reporter trying to work his earpiece. “We're on...? We're on, we're on!!” He seemed out of breath. “I stand now at the site of Maurice, Minnesota, where the University of Minnesota had—has, has—a campus. The campus and the town itself are presently...under attack by a group of terrorists...clad in...” The image seemed to flicker out for a second.

The shot turned back for a second, showing only a plume of smoke. Jacob felt his throat closing.

...attackers have managed to devastate the town and, and have been assaulting people...with a variety of weapons...” He paused to breathe, and seemed to sob. “These weapons are...oh God...they seem to be transforming...”

Just then, the shot cut out. The screen was black, and the original reporter was talking. She seemed to be trying to figure out what was going on, and how to get the connection back.

Soon even this blackness was gone, and a message denoting technical difficulties was all that was left.

What's going on?”

Maurice is under attack,” Doctor Kay replied.

I figured that part out.”

And a detachment of the United States Army is being sent there to deal with the assailants.”

Lex suddenly shook his mood to look at the man. “Is my brother going with them?”

In all likelihood. Perhaps he volunteered, to go be with his friend, if such a thing is possible.”

Jacob questioned how Kai knew about the friendship between Amos and Marcel, but he figured it was all just part of the hallucination. This was simultaneously too contrived and too horrible for him to deal with.

Can you get us to Maurice in time?” he asked.

Maybe not in time,” the Doctor responded. “But McGee Manor can fly. And travel very, very fast. I can get you there.”

McGee Manor?” Lex said. “Jacob. Your bro and my bro had a campaign together. It was set in 1920s Boston. Your bro's character was a millionaire with a huge mansion called Snaps McGee. His house was called McGee Manor.” His face barely emoted at all.

All a coincidence, most likely,” Doctor Kai said, his voice suddenly snooty. “Now if you're coming at all, we'll have to move quickly. I can't keep a House docked over another house for very long—even if the neighbors assume this is just another expansion.”

Moving on an invisible cue, The House outside began to move; it slid down, to the outdoor deck extending not far from where Jacob was standing, in the living room. A severed porch, with marble stairs leading up to a front door, beckoned. Every detail of the Manor—save for the fact that it was floating, revealing several contained basement chambers dangling precariously over Lex's lawn—was just as it was in the dream. Which wasn't a dream at all, naturally.

The front doors opened by themselves with a sinister creaking sound, also on cue. Doctor Kai said nothing as he began to approach the door.

Lex and Jacob had no choice but to follow.

#47

Jacob was en route to Lex's house with the satisfaction of having just forgotten the whole affair. What was that all about again? He couldn't remember.

Lex Vecchio lived in a Castle in the Swamp, with his brother, Marcel. It was an old manor estate, made so by artificial beefing-up by their rich parents. Which is to say, it was a totally ordinary house with a lot of expensive expansions added to it, to make it look as if it were some sort of enormous Gothic mansion. Jacob knew the Vecchios had had issues in the past with Minnesotan building codes, but were rich enough to get past such things. Why they didn't just buy a larger house, Jacob never knew, but maybe it was Lex's desire to stay close to Jacob, and Marcel's to stay close to Amos, that had some say in it.

They had agreed to continue an old campaign of theirs which they hadn't done in sometime. Jacob's character, AdamAntium, was on the verge of raiding a giant tower controlled by an evil wizard. The tower was full of undead and Eldritch Spawn, indicating he was some sort of necromancer. The tower itself was made out of adamantium, so he was an adamantium necromancer to boot. Jacob had a hatred of wizards, being instead inclined towards obscure and occasionally fan-generated sub-classes of monks and fighters. He had presently punched over three hundred skeletons in the face, and at his level that was automatically fatal to all but the privileged few. Said few had the privilege to live. Skeletons do not frequently have such privilege.

The idea of a giant undead-filled tower, however, reminded Jacob of something. The wizard/skeleton aspect had nothing to do with it, even if his brother had a dangerous love-hate fascination with wizards and skeletons. It was just the idea of a huge haunted edifice. Probably nothing, though.

The Vecchio estate wasn't haunted. It was just huge. So it wasn't that.

Probably nothing.

He pulled up in the driveway, which was stacked, as always, with a freakish amount of cars. There was always a tiny spot for “ordinary” cars to park, though. Marcel normally parked there. But he wasn't there anymore; he had gone off and joined the Army. His desire to stay close to Jacob's bro was strong but not strong enough to keep him from shipping off. Amos in turn was frequently in Maurice.

Lex restrained the dog when Jacob came in. “I've already got everything set up,” he said. “So sit down.” Lex often restrained his own theatrics just as he held back his dog. He was really much more like Amos, or much more like how Marcel used to be.

Jacob sat down silently. It was just the two of them. A lonely game of wizards.

Jacob was the one who had to carry the theatrics now, but he felt off, as he tried to work up a shitty joke to pass the time as Lex sat down. Lex moved somewhat slowly and allowed himself to do that even more, now that Marcel wasn't there to yell at him. But Jacob couldn't come up with this joke, because his mind was too dead-set on other things. Like looking at the model of AdamAntium. They had just used a simple black-garbed human figurine, something with some name they had forgotten, but its appearance itself seemed familiar—though like the name, Jacob had forgotten what it was.

For awhile, it seems like nothing happened. Lex seemed to take forever to reach his chair.

Lex was just in the process of sitting down the house shook slightly. Jacob cried out as he fell over, and the figurines toppled off the table as well. Behind Lex, a bottle of root beer fell over, cracking the plastic neck-ring and spraying the drink everywhere. Some paintings fell down, their frames splintering.

But it only lasted for a split second.

What was that?” Lex asked, in his minimalist manner.

An earthquake?”

Well, yes, of course. But.”

With that “but”, the matter seemed settled. Not for Jacob, of course, but his brain was confused. He stood up long before Lex did and started mopping up the spilled root beer.

The game started up once again, but next that sudden jar, everything seemed boring. Everything was boring. Including the way in which the earthquake was handled. Why was Lex so muted now? Why was everything muted now, when it clearly wasn't before...

It was as if something was being drained, elsewhere. As if there was a tap flowing out, as Lex slowly rolled the dice behind his hand, pretending he was excited about these NPCs getting crits. The game had commenced, but Jacob hadn't really noticed.

He was looking outside.

Maybe this house was haunted. It certainly had enough additions to have trapped a worker or two at some point. But everything was bland, and unchanging. He was only now just noticing this, suddenly, that he was becoming upset with his life...

This house couldn't be haunted. It was too real. In order for it to be haunted, it needed to be a Soft Place...

You can't punch through the wall of the tower, Jacob. It's made out of adamantium.”

How long would I have to wait to get a crit on my strength check?”

Um. By House rules, twenty minutes.”

Okay.”

That's two hundred rounds.”

Your point being?”

Your party is under attack by a Mindflayer. He's already killed your bard.”

Fine. I attack the Mindflayer...”

DM Rails. Well, not really. But it felt like it.

Jacob was getting edgy now. That is, he felt on edge. Seeing DM Rails in real life, for some weird and stupid reason, felt like a weird freedom violation. He started feeling, with some completely stupid gloom, like life was always just “attacking the Mindflayer”. And because he was feeling this way in the most ridiculous manner possible, now whimsy was getting into it. Tempering things. Making them seem less real...

And everything just felt so ineffably slurred and wrong and these-aren't-real-feelings-Jacob that he just suddenly stood up and screamed.

He made something happen, and in that utter chaos and unreality McGee Manor broke through, its anti-grav thrusters keep it humming above the house.

#46

He woke up again. His head was starting to hurt from a trope hangover. It was miserable. Then he looked over once more.

Doctor Kay was still there. “Let me know if that headache gets to you. You may be stuck in a time loop and that is a most painful...”

MOTHER

FUCKER.”

The fact of the matter is that calling me such a thing is...”

WHAT THE BLOODY HELL ARE YOU DOING IN MY ROOM YOU PICKLY HAM FUCKER?”

...rude. And that's even worse.”

Jacob lunged over and grabbed his freshman archery bow. He had no arrows lying around but maybe he could pull a feint. Of course, his dark-robed companion was too quick, standing up, setting down the drawings he had taken, and taking a phony martial arts posture. Jacob caught a glimpse of the drawings; he had never done them before, but sure enough, he had seen them in the dream-layer he had been in before. At the time the word “dream-layer” entered his head, he was reminded of Inception and only became angrier.

You can't stop me. I wouldn't advise it, at any rate. Your world is going to be falling apart very soon and I may be the only person who can use you properly enough to save it.”

Jacob didn't lower the bow. “Is this about that fucking shark thing or whatever?”

The Shark, the Vulture, the Fox. Renowned for predation, scavenging, sneaking. The attributes of my Lord, the creature known...”

Jacob stood up and began punching himself in the face. “I.”

...as Kul'ul, who I have...”

AM.”

...redesigned McGee Manor to be oriented...”

NOT.

LISTENING. TO.”

He then turned mid-punch. Amos was in the door frame, his hands in his pockets.

Um. Anyway. Hideous chump monster.”

His bro had a lack of expression on his face.

Jacob dropped his arm. “Yes?”

I'm heading back out to Maurice. She's waiting for me.”

Oh, yeah, that's right.” He was going to see his girlfriend. “I forgot about that. Well, good luck, foolish scum-dog. Don't die.”

You too.”

No emotions were shown that day. For there were none. None but puzzlement, as Jacob considered the nature of his first visitor, as the Slimechap started out.

He figured it was all a dream. One that ended with nothing worse than embarrassment. And he didn't even see it as such because Amos cared not of such things. Being the ugly beast-creature that he was.

Still, once Amos was gone, he sat down in his chair, where Kay or Kai or whatever had been. He looked at the drawings, pondering them deeply. They were in his style, but he didn't recognize them, except for what he had seen of them in his dream. There were three of them. A strangely-armored figure, covered in darkly-shaded circuitry (in black and white, like all his initial sketches); a similarly-armored man, with a proud face, smiling devilishly; and the weirdest of all, what looked like a beaked shark with blazing eyes, a hunched form, and a twisted cone growing from its brow, which was pointed on the face, giving the eyes a cruel look. The image, which was barely even etched at all, was the only one with a label: “Kul'ul”. Kai had said that word in the hallucination.

Moving slowly, with an overdramatic caution, Jacob slipped the sketches into his desk drawer, figuring he'd never have to look at them again. Then he figured that maybe it would best to just cook breakfast, call up Lex, and just forget about the whole affair.

He turned over to the side. Doctor Kay was sitting at his desk chair. He was thumbing through some of his sketches. “This is impressive pencil work, Mister Berkley.”

Jacob's eyes went wide.

Motherfucker!!

Jacob woke up.

When he realized that he had slipped in the most unbelievably fucking stupid of tropes, he slapped his face.

Motherfucker!”
